The eBook is in PDF format, which can be read on any platform, such as Mac, PC or Linux etc, as long as you have a PDF reader application installed. We recommend the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader DC that can be downloaded for free from the Adobe site.
NB The images and screenshots have all been optimised (where possible) for high resolution Retina displays and during tests Adobe Acrobat Reader DC was found to deliver a much better viewing experience than some other PDF readers, such as Apple’s Preview application, especially when viewed on non Retina displays.
This is an eBook supplied by electronic delivery, so once payment has cleared you will receive an email from FastSpring soon afterwards at the same address used during the checkout process.
When the email arrives, simply click on the link and it will take you to a page where you can start the download. The book is stored on the Amazon S3 service that is renowned for stability and speed.
The download time will vary according to the speed of your connection, but usually takes a couple minutes unless you have a slow connection.
Generally speaking the email will arrive within a couple of minutes but please make sure your spam filters are not blocking the email and that the message hasn't been sent to your junk folder by mistake.
Though extremely rare, delays in delivery can occur between mail servers. If you haven't received an email after an hour and it isn't in your spam folder then please email FastSpring [email protected] with your details so they can assist you.
Please note that the download link can only be sent to the email address used at time of purchase, so it's important that you can access email at that address.
99.9% of downloads work perfectly the first time. The book and associated videos are stored on Amazon S3, which is probably the most stable network of servers in the world, however even the most reliable internet connection can experience occasional slow downs or instability.
For those experiencing difficulties it's worth checking first to see if the problem is with your general internet connection in which case it might only be necessary to wait a short period before your connection improves.
With a reasonably fast broadband connection a typical download takes just a minute or so but it can vary. If you have significant difficulties with the download after trying a few times you should try sending an email to FastSpring [email protected] with your details so they can help you. FastSpring handles the billing and delivery.
We have had requests for a paper version of the book, however the additional benefits offered by an enhanced eBook including search, video, direct access to websites via hyperlinks and additional content is too good to ignore, so with such a wide variety of computers and reading devices capable of handling the PDF format we felt this was the best way to go.
Occasionally we are asked if the book is available in another language, such as French, Spanish or Italian, however these requests are relatively rare and the costs of translation cannot sadly be justified, so it will remain in English for the foreseeable future but an update will be posted if that changes.
You can read the book without being connected to the internet, however you will need an internet connection if you want to access any of the linked websites or to download some of the additional content, such as printer test images that are linked to from inside the book.
The book was written by Ashley Karyl, who is a long established professional photographer based in the UK with experience working in Africa, Europe and Australia.
His images have been used by clients, such as Cerruti 1881, IO Donna, Collistar, J Walter Thompson, La Rinascente, Rimmel, Neutro Roberts, Kelemata, Kérastase, Marie Claire, Young & Rubicam, Ogilvy One, IPC Media, TBWA, Rizzoli, Adidas, Arnoldo Mondadori, Euro RSCG, Microsoft, Hachette, City Bank, JP Morgan Chase, Boots Group, Colgate and Palmolive etc.
Ashley has many years of real world experience with colour management. He is an X-Rite Coloratti Pro partner and Phase One Ambassador.
First of all launch iTunes. Now Go to File > Add to Library, or simply hit Command+O. Next choose your PDF file, which will be imported into the "Books" section of iTunes. NB You will need to have iBooks installed, which can be downloaded for free from iTunes. Now connect your iPad, iPhone or iPad touch via USB and make sure your device is set up to sync books.
Finally sync your device to import the PDF, which will show up on a bookshelf under a section designated for PDF files. Simply select the book to read it on your device. There is a good chance if you are using Yosemite or later with iCloud that the eBook will just sync across your different Apple devices automatically.
NB Although it is theoretically possible to read on an iPhone or other smartphone, we believe you will find it much more practical on a device with a bigger screen like a desktop computer or an iPad.
OS X and Windows calculate files sizes slightly differently, however the total download size is approximately 1000mb. First the PDF eBook is approximately 85mb and then there are five short video tutorials that take up roughly 900mb
The videos are available in 1080 HD as H264 MP4, which offers excellent quality with relatively small file sizes and widespread compatibility across several media players, such as QuickTime, Windows Media Player and VLC etc. There are five short tutorials covering just over 20 minutes in total.
We cannot guarantee the videos will play on all your devices, but if your computer and software are reasonably modern it will most likely be OK. The files were widely tested on a number of computers without problems.
The first part of the book concentrates on taking steps to ensure the best possible starting point to colour management with your images, such as setting the correct White Balance and exposure, while various other parts of the book also address colour management from a photographer's perspective.
There are however, many other areas such as display calibration, colour settings, creating the right working environment and troubleshooting that are just as valid for anybody wishing to produce consistently excellent results.
This book is newly released in late September 2015 and has all the latest software versions. These include Lightroom CC, Photoshop CC 2014/2015, Photoshop Elements 13.1, Capture One Pro 8.3 and Pixelmator 3.3.2. More recent versions since the release are substantially similar or identical for colour management.
Colour management in Lightroom CC is effectively the same as Lightroom 6 and previous versions, while Photoshop CC is basically the same as CS6 apart from some minor changes in appearance of the colour settings interface.
